The rocks that make up Roan Mountain have been there since before the Appalachians came to be. These rocks, known as Cranberry gneiss, are found only in the United States. The peaks in the vicinity of Roan Mountain are believed by geologists to have been as high as twenty to thirty thousand feet before the slow processes of glaciation and erosion brought them to their present height over the course of many millions of years.
