Saw-whet owls haunt the shadowy stands of fir and spruce in the Southern Appalachians. In North Carolina, there are only two isolated populations of saw-whets, the Blue Ridge Mountains and the Allegheny Plateau. Saw-whet owls are only 7 inches when full-grown and make a sound similar to a chain saw.
