The Wild Turkey, called the "noble bird" by Benjamin Franklin (who wanted it to be the national bird), was close to extinction in 1930. Because of protection, restocking programs and the return of mature forests as its habitat, wild turkeys have made an astonishing comeback and are often seen in the Southern Appalachian Highlands.
