William Sterling Smith, a supporter of the Southern Appalachian Highlands
Conservancy, worked tirelessly, quietly, and effectively since
the 1960's to protect our precious mountain heritage.
William passed away last year leaving us memories of him
as a quiet saint whose energy and kindness will always inspire
the Conservancy. He and others like him have left a remarkable
legacy of conservation achievement: thousands of acres of
places of wonder, protected for the benefit of present and
future generations
William first gazed upon the Southern Appalachians highlands
on a hiking trip in spring 1926, when he and his companions
climbed Blue Ridge Pinnacle. A life long love of the mountains
was kindled.
Some sixty years later, William joined volunteer Conservancy
crews that cut back hawthorns invading the magnificent grassy
balds of the Roan Highlands. He served as a Trustee of the
Conservancy from 1985 to 1991, and faithfully helped in the
office for many years. His financial generosity included many
gift memberships for friends who have become active supporters
of the Conservancy themselves. In 1998, William received the
Stanley A Murray Award for volunteer service.
